This problem couples frustratingly with the fact that you get next to nothing for selling items. So even if you think you might want an item later, you can't store it you MUST either carry it or sell it. Your only choice is to sell the items to a shop. The real problem though is that you don't have ANYWHERE to store items other than carrying them. The game implements encumberance, which means that if your character is carrying too much your already pitiful movement speed is slowed even more. Now I see why the claim such high gameplay hours. Coupled with the poor control, this is extremely annoying because it takes forever to move from barrel to crate to chest. Also, most of them are locked which means that you need to take the time to open them, which takes a few seconds. You often find gold pieces in increments of one. The problem is that there are TONS of them, and the loot within them is generally very poor. The game has many MANY barrels, crates, desks, and chests all over that you open and find loot. Combat is (of course) very slow as well, with your character making an attack every six seconds. This results of often having to manually rotate the camera to see objects. Although I'd prefer to use the "driving cam" most of the time, the camera snaps around if you try to open a chest or fight an enemy, so I use the overhead camera. I'd better never find out that anyone who recommended Neverwinter Nights has ever bitched about the controls in Resident Evil, because Neverwinter Nights' are far worse.
This makes it hard to quickly get from place to place. Movement speed is slow and turning speed is horrible. Take it SloooFirst off, your character controls like a tank. You start in training at the Neverwinter academy, and it goes through the various actions you need to perform in the game, and here's where the dissapointment begins. I was impressed with the customizability of your character's appearance and I think I made a pretty good likeness. I thought to myself "that looks a lot like Caska from Berserk," so I decide to create a Neverwinter Nights version of Caska. I look through the portraits and find one of a dark-skinned woman wearing a cloak with a hood, yet also clearly wearing armor. This was the most fun part of the game so far. I bought the the Neverwinter Nights Platinum DVD version on 48-hour Madness from GoGamer for $27 shipped (what a coincidence that it was on sale just then!).ĭuring installation I flip through the manual, which is ~250 pages! Then I fire it up and start creating a character.
*NOTE*: Since KOTOR was developed by a primarily PC developer and was originally indended for PC I don't consider it a console RPG even though it came out on the XOBX first, when I say console RPG I mean Japanese RPG. I mostly play console RPGs, but a few months ago I had picked up KOTOR for PC for $20 and absolutely loved it, so I was eager to play another Bioware RPG. Recently there was a thread here about PC RPGs, and after hearing some good things about Neverwinter Nights I decided to pick it up.
